One of the many things that makes Bennett successful is its ability to offer services to help its customers run more efficiently and help them save money. Bennett accomplished this with a recent move.
The Project
A customer needed a 6040 FS Cat, a hydraulic mining shovel, moved from the Port of Galveston, Texas to a storage facility and then to its final destination in Nashwauk, Minnesota. According to Brandie Petit, the customer care representative for the project, Bennett’s job was to move the shovel from the port where storage is more costly to a more affordable storage location pending a firm destination with a later delivery date. That move took place February 2014. The shovel was taken from the Port in Galveston, Texas to Bennett Distribution Services in Houston, Texas. After more than four months in storage, the final move took place over about a two week time frame and involved 15 truckloads, with Bennett handling 14 of those truckloads that took the shovel from Bennett Distribution Services storage facility to Nashwauk, Minnesota.
The Team
In addition to Petit, Ted Gaze, vice president of sales, was involved with the project and Logan Erickson, warehouse and terminal manager of Bennett Distribution Services, assisted on the project as well. Bennett’s Heavy Haul Dispatch team, Brokerage Dispatch team, and Ron Carroll, manager of Brokerage Operations, were also part of the team that managed the move performed by Bennett owner operators and brokerage carriers.
“I spoke to each driver daily and kept spreadsheets for customer tracking purposes,” Petit said.
The Challenge
The challenge for this project was that the shovel needed to be loaded and delivered in the order requested by the shipper and consignee.
“The consignee wanted to build the CAT as we delivered, so they requested for them (the parts) to be delivered in a specific order,” Petit said “The loads were in storage and some pieces were blocked in by others. Everyone worked together to make this successful.”
The Process
Clearing the grounds and scheduling started a couple of weeks prior to actual load dates, and loading for the final move began on July 22, 2015. A crane was used to load the parts and they were moved on up to 10 axles. The last piece was delivered on August 3, 2015.
The Results
The project was completed to the customer’s satisfaction. Petit said she enjoys projects of this nature, adding that it is very detailed work that takes dedication and concentration to be successful.
